One of Netherlands’ most famous leaders were William I. (William the Silent, William of Orange) William was born on April 24th, 1533. He was born in the house of Nassau and Dillenburg. He was the founder and liberator. He was descended from a princely German family. He became prince of orange in 1544, and founder of the Branch House of Orange Nassau. He was famous for being a leader of the Dutch Revolt against Phillip II of Spain. This struggle helped set off the 80 years war in 1648. King Phillip II wasn’t very fond of William. In fact, he ordered William dead. On July 10th, King Phillip got his wish. William was assassinated by Balthasar Gerid. After this happened, William was honored in the Dutch National Anthem, “Wilhelmus van Nassau; ben ik van duitschen bloed.” Which in English means “William of Nassau, I am of German Blood?”
Another great leader was Erasmus. He was born October 28th, 1467. His real name was Gerrit Gerritz. He turned his name less correct latin and greek. Desiderius Erasmus. This means “desired and bued.” Erasmus was born under ashodowof, the great cathedral in Rotterdam, in the wide church street no3. When he was 10 years old, he was sent to Deventer and entered one of the Common Life schools. Then, about 2 years later, he went to Herrtogebosen. When he was there he attempted to get his Monkish vows. He finally refused. After he refused, he worked hard to master Greek. He soon wrote a book called “Praise of Folly.” His greatest achievement with his writing skills was the Greek Testament. He sadly died in 1559 because of old age.
A major leader from the Netherlands was a Dutch admiral, Michiel Adriaanszn de Ruyter. He was born March 24th, 1607. He is most famous for his role in the Angelo-Dutch Wars in the 17th century. He fought English and French in these wars. He scored many victories! He is also known for being the Raiden of the medway.
He became a sailor around the age of 11. He was a captain of a private ship. He was meant to hunt for Raiders. They were operating from Dunkirk pegging on the Dutch merchant shipping. His self esteem grew towards Dutch captains. He was called the “Best ever.” He finally died in April 29th, 1676.
